Independence is more than writing a song without permission. It’s knowing who owns the recording, where the artwork came from, and how your audience will find the music after a platform’s algorithm moves on. Before you announce a new rock or metal release, slow down and make the parts fit together.

Stage one: finish the actual release
- Approve the final mixes and masters on more than one listening system.
- Keep lossless masters and separate, clearly named backups.
- Write down final song titles, artist names, featured performers and writing credits.
- Resolve permissions for samples, guest performances, artwork and photos.
- Agree within the band on who may upload, license or remove the recordings.
Stage two: package it properly
Choose cover artwork that belongs to you or is properly licensed, and maintain source files. Create a short artist bio, a one-paragraph release story and a handful of clear photographs that can be shared with legitimate outlets. The artwork should still read well as a tiny square on a phone.
Stage three: plan discovery outside one platform
A distributor can place recordings on streaming services, but distribution alone does not create listeners. Build a simple landing page, collect email sign-ups with consent, and provide one direct place for links, news and merchandise. Avoid buying fake streams or engagement; those numbers do not create a real fan base.
Stage four: prepare launch week
- Confirm the release appears correctly where scheduled.
- Send a short announcement to the band’s actual supporters.
- Publish one performance, rehearsal or behind-the-song clip with permission.
- Contact local venues, independent stations and relevant music writers with a useful story—not a mass spam pitch.
- Track genuine feedback, site clicks and email sign-ups.
After release day
Keep making the music easy to discover. A live session, lyric explanation, band interview or new show announcement can give a release a second life. Own your contact list and maintain your catalog records so a change in platform does not erase your history.
